1ST ASIAN BIRD FAIR 2010 – DAVAO

1ST ASIAN BIRD FAIR 2010 - DAVAO

The first Asian Bird Fair was held here in Davao on Sept. 24-25 at the Insular Hotel grounds. My kids were excited knowing they could see variety of birds at the fair, but unfortunately it was a birdless fair, as the exposition was mainly organized to promote awareness and educational drive amongst everyone.

The fair was participated by hundreds of Bird Club enthusiast all over Asia, with a primary aim of promoting awareness of the importance of the birds in our ecosystem, how humans have encroach and destroy their habitat and how will this phenomenon affect humans.

My son’s disappointment (see the STORY HERE) was translated into telling me this, so mom, in a not so distant future, we will all just be seeing birds on books and photos, so I think we should buy a frame as a souvenir. He was right, maybe yes, son! That’s why were here getting something out of this birdless show to help in your own little way to conserve this specie.

So what is the importance of birds in our ecosystem?

My son’s answer: So that Uncle pip will have endless subject for his bird photography …. Yeah, but more than that, the birds play a vital role in the ecosystem, they are pollinators, they transfer pollens from one flower to another, thus enabling fertilization and reproduction, they are the most effective agent to dispersing seed in the forest, this enables random distribution of tree specie in our forest. Other than this, they are predators and prey, ensuring the continuity of the food chain.

The bird fair, was a very smart move to inform humans that if continue to destroy their habitat, time will come, actually time has come and we are now paying for it.

You're right, Vernz. The time is now. For many years I've heard horror stories of birds dying because they're stuck in the plastic rings used to hold six-packs of beer or soda together. There are many other kinds of plastic waste that kill birds by strangling them, or choking them because the birds swallow them…
I'm sorry the Bird Fair was birdless, but if every child in Asia learned what your son learned, perhaps something can be done about the needless deaths of so many pollinators and seed-distributors.
